RecommendedBooks

One of the aims of this site is to provide material that is not readily available elsewhere, or to highlight worthwhile material that might otherwise be overlooked.

To that end, we will not repeat the more usual recommendations for books on Darwin or the Galápagos.

Instead, this page will highlight high-quality books that might otherwise be underappreciated.

The first recommendation in this category is:

William Beebe, Galápagos: World's End.

This is a classic, very entertaining, truly well-written account of a scientific expedition to the Galápagos in 1923, when the islands were practically uninhabited. The locations and experiences described by Beebe still resonate today. Highly recommended. I did not see it for sale in the shops of Puerto Ayora when I was there in January 2004. It has been reprinted by Dover, and used copies are readily available on the Internet.

Our second suggestion is:

Peter Sís, The Tree of Life.

Ostensibly a children's book, there is much here for adults. The text is spare, the illustrations well chosen. Mr. Sís did his research, and got the details right (well, nearly all the details). Click here to visit his website and to see samples from the book.
